Last year, when we decided to go homeschool, question #1 was “what curriculum do you use?!” (You can see the answers to all the other questions asked by people in this post, if you are curious, plus why we decide to homeschool!)
I was never interested in doing a single curriculum for all subjects – my mother did not take the route when she was a homeschooling my brother and I was 30 years ago and I had the same desire to choose things that succeeded for us in each subject.

This is a full overview of what we did this year, but, like last year, a few notes:
- Homeschooling rules vary greatly based on the state. Your state may not care if you watch cartoons from the sun to the sun and call it homeschool. Your country might want a detailed plan submitted for every child who is in harmony with the standards designed by their country. So I know that what is successful for us might not be an option at every location.
- My goal for homeschool is to trigger curiosity and love of learning in my children. I am significantly less worried about them studying certain materials in a particular topic. When I went to a public school for the first time as a ninth grade student, the most surprising thing for me was to find that I was one of the few students who still liked school and study (even in the AP class and my award). Protecting Learning Love is one of my biggest priorities for my children.
- Two of my older children (secondary and high school) conduct a part -time homeschool and attend public schools for some of their classes. I did the same when I was in high school and I had all posts about how the hybrid homeschool works for my children here, if you want details!
Every girl has a wire basket to hold all their school supplies and I have this graph on the wall so they can track what they need to do every day (people always want to know if there are gifts to complete their graphs – there is no. This is not an incentive program; that’s just a way for them to track what they need to do and have a visual way to see what needs to happen).
This is the Homeschool curriculum that we use for each class level
ELLA – Class 10 (Homeschool Hybrid and Public Schools)
Last year, Ella mostly did a homeschool and only took a few classes in high school. This year the opposite – most of the class will be in public schools and slightly done at home.
- AP English He took this in high school and will take the AP exam in spring.
- World History AP. Other classes in secondary schools with AP exams at the end of the school year.
- AP Biology. And . . . Other classes in secondary schools with AP exams at the end of the school year.
- Prealculus. He will do this at school too.
- Mandarin China. He took the AP exam (and got 5!) In spring so he will only continue to work with a tutor every week and watch several shows and read several books in Mandarin to maintain it.
- Piano. Ella started playing last summer and became very good for the past year, so she went to her lessons once a week and then practiced during the work time of individuals throughout the week.
- Art class. Ella took a weekly art class for high school students in local studios.
- Pickleball. Ella likes pickleball and plays throughout the summer and will take lessons and continue to play recreation this autumn.
ANI – Class 7 (Homeschool Hybrid and Public Schools)
Last year, Ani Homeschooled was full of time but now she is in high school, she will go there part time and homeschooling. He took very little in public schools that he would still work at school at home.
- Mandarin China. Ani left the Chinese immersion program in grades 4 and 5 to attend the accelerated program in our district, but last year he worked with a tutor all year to try to restore his Mandarin in the order of work and he would take two Chinese classes (one language, one culture) in public schools. The teacher is phenomenal – Ella has it in grades 7 and 8 – so I am happy to take it from her too.
- History. We did it World Story (Book 3) Everything With Again This Year -I read loudly one chapter twice a week and on holidays, the girls read related books recommended by this curriculum (I mostly got it from the library)
- Science. He will do practical chemistry through a good educated heart that meets almost once a week.
- Language art. He did the intro to the art of language through a good educated heart. They met almost once a week.
- Mathematics. Last year last year, Ani will do mathematics with Mrs. Bart and they will do Saxon Algebra 1.
- Geography. Like last year, Bart will do geography with girls and they will focus especially on US geography this year and learn about the places we visited in the future.
- Cursive. Ani did this chair workbook that she started towards the end of last year but not yet finished.
- Poetry. During our morning meeting, every week I chose a poet and we read some of the biographies of the picture book from the poet and then read some of their poems and they chose 1-3 poetry to be memorized for the next two weeks. This year, I do a quarter at a time instead of trying to choose a new one every week. We will focus on the poet who has a connection to Boston/New England before our autumn trip.
- History of Art. This is not intended to be a comprehensive history of art but every week during our morning meeting, I will choose an artist, we will read some of the biography of the picture book about the artist and see some of their most famous arts. We will spend the first quarter focusing on art and artists who are in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum because we will visit this fall.
- Type. I write a post here about our Favorite Favorite Typing Program – Every day the girls do 15 minutes of training.
- Art class. Ani takes a local stained glass class for teenagers and teenagers. He did this last year and liked it.
- Violin lesson. Ani wanted to play violin for years and she finally started at the end of the last school year – we had a teacher who came to our very comfortable house.
