After World War II, Germany was divided into four zones distributed between the US, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. Berlin is also divided, and the parts owned by the US, Britain and France become West Berlin, while the Soviet section becomes East Berlin.

There is a big difference between the standard of living and ideology that is upheld between the two parts of the city. Thus, in the late 1940s, at least four million East Germany had crossed the border to West Berlin for a higher quality of life.

On August 12, 1961, the wire fence was established to surround West Berlin and prevent people from moving across – the family is divided overnight. The wall was fortified with concrete, guard pole, and inspection post during the following years.

In the late 1980s, the parts of Eastern Europe became increasingly liberal, and there were riots that grew in Germany to end severe restrictions. When the new trip was wrongly announced on November 9, 1989, the crowd on both sides of the wall immediately rushed to the examination post and, in the end, flooding.

Historically significant walls because they are seen as physical representation of ideological differences between East and West during the Cold War. When the wall fell, he weakened the power of the East German government, which ultimately led to German reunification in 1990.

Today, the wall is still standing across the city. The longest part is 1.3 kilometers and, covered in colorful arts and murals, this is the longest open air gallery in the world. There is also a warning to learn more about the history of walls and cultural impacts.
